„Agape – winter spectacle" performed by Theatre "A" from Gliwice, Poland is a colourful street spectacle, based on Christian legend Vest for Infant Jesus. The motto of this simple story - a biblical passage: "love is strong as Death”... and even stronger... makes this spectactle independant from any season.
In small German town - Kresburg, clock bells strike Christmas with 5 minute delay. The perversity towards time, which regularly and inevitably counts human life is a result of ... Infant Jesus absent-mindedness and liking for feast (narrowly: the treat agape, the sacrafice of love sealed finally on the cross, according to Christian interpretation). The truth that Death is a serious thing, is confirmed by history of king Herod, referring to the tradition of pastorals (Nativity plays), and also by solemn „danse macabre”, danced to the rythm of epidemic ravaging medieval Europe. Of course, the filling of winter spectacle, characteristic for Christmas time, is sweet and warm, given in sugar-icing joy and in sprinkle of hope – so according to Christmas recipe ...
„Agape...” - is a vivid spectacle, visually referring to medieval market places (as shown in canvases of Dutch masters), with stage design inspired by topography of the Beyond from late medieval mysteries - religious performances, spectacular theatrical forms, occuping market squares for whole weeks and gathering each day town community (in absence of, hard to believe, tv shows). Paying attention to audience, authors limited artistic voice to less than one hour, but experienced intensively. In the spectacle, there is a place for toy and shadow theatres, Old Polish pastoral texts (corresponding to West European tradition) said and sung. This all is laved in mysterious and soft light of Cracovian cribs and in suggestive music pictures, touching if needed - as characteristic for Polish canticle. The scenic world, which roots grow into rich soil of Mideastern Europe, blossoms in winter season with "mystery of incarnation", thus melting ice of hearts under each latitude ...
